Pattern: Outdoorsy

If you’re an avid outdoor person, you know that even summer mornings and evenings can be chilly when you’re paddling, bicycling, or hiking. If a full-on hat or scarf might be more than you need, the Outdoorsy Head Band and Neck Warmer will be just right.

Wear it folded over as a reversible head band to keep your ears warm. Pull it up over your head at its full width for ear warmth or to secure your hair in a breeze. Pull it down around your neck to catch the draft at the top of your jacket. Four wearable options for whatever your need!

Yarn Requirements:

You will need equal amounts of a self-striping or variegated yarn and a coordinating semi-solid yarn in either worsted or fingering weight:

Worsted: 45 – 55 yards each
Fingering: 80 – 90  yards each

Yarn used in the samples: (narrow, folded headband version) Fibernymph Dye Works Cozy worsted, Mountain House Winter Self-Striping/Iron Oxide Red Semi-Solid; (full open headband version) handspun self-striping (unavailable)/FDW Cozy worsted, Raspberry Semi-Solid; Fibernymph Dye Works Bounce fingering, Chrysocolla Self-Striping/Sand Semi-Solid.

Needles:

US 7/4.5mm 16” circular for worsted; US 1.5/2.5mm 16” circular for fingering. (Note that the instructions are written for working in the round on a 16” circular needle, but you can easily adapt the pattern to use a longer circular cable if you prefer Magic Loop, or you could use DPNs if that is your preference.)

Sizes, Fit & Gauge:

Knit as written, your finished Outdoorsy should measure just over 6” from cast on edge to bind off edge. It should be approximately 5.5” across when lying flat (making the unstretched circumference approximately 11”). While the pattern was written to fit a 20” head circumference (measuring the head from forehead, across the ears, to the base of head at neck), due to the ribbed design, this piece will stretch comfortably to accommodate a variety of head and neck sizes. Test knitters reported the Outdoorsy fitting comfortably on heads from children aged three up through adult males with 23” head circumferences.

If necessary, the Outdoorsy can easily be resized up or down width-wise by adding or subtracting increments of four stitches. Adjust your yarn requirements accordingly. Additional custom-sizing details are available in the pattern.
